WordCamp Sacramento 2018

WordCamp 2018!!!

It is that time of the year again! Since 2015, every year in Sacramento, Ca., Word Press users and web developers meet. This is my third year and I feel like Junior (Intermediate) and I start thinking that next year I will be senior, but would that be for me? I am sure that every time that WordCamp meets, there is something new for me to learn. So, I am planning to attend next year. I hope I can prepare myself and become more expert in one area so next year I can become a speaker. So, WordCamp Sac this year was hosted at the beautiful Sacramento Convention Center in the heart of California’s Capital City. The Convention Center sits just steps from the California State Capital, historic attractions, and amazing restaurants, as well as mere blocks from the brand new Golden 1 Center and K Street Mall. This place is much bigger and beautiful for big events like this one. However, my first WordCamp was at California State University, Sacramento and it was pretty homie. I miss that place!A huge thank to the organizers and volunteers who made possible that WordCamp Sacramento continues as a community-organized event and to everyone who literally spent time and energy to support WordPress in our greater Sacramento region. Now, for me the WC Sac 2018 was interesting and these are my three take away:
  1. Gutenberg is the new WordPress editor and although I have started using it, I realized that I don’t like it. I rather be with the classic style of editing and posting. The Gutenberg sets up the posting page as bloques and I had a hard time adding pictures and text. However, it is just a mood of comfort and practicality. In the future, I will spend some time learning and eventually when it will be the default for WP users, I will activate it back and use it.
  2. The WordPress Media Library is an important component of my WP experience but I haven’t paid much attention to the “Alt Text” section. After WC Sac 2018, I learned that it is goof for search engine. So I will stat adding text and details
  3. Although I don’t offer coursers online, I am planning to share and prepare some tutorials and some coursers in the future. The session and information in it were helpful.
Finally, the Happiness Bar is one of my favorite places to hangout. The WordCamp Happiness Bar is basically FREE help for your website. The Happiness Bar is staffed with volunteer WordPress users, designers, and developers who are offering their experience and expertise to help you. So what might they be able to help you with?
  • Plugin advice
  • Theme advice
  • CSS help
  • HTML help
  • Code issues
  • Security advice
I always learn something in a more individual and personalize level. This year, I fixed something that required CSS knowledge and I was glad to find the right person to help me. Like myself, many other people were able to get help and I am so happy for this place. Now, the only things I hope it can change for next year is the temperature inside the convention. In Sacramento the weekend of Sept. 15th and 16th was fantastic. We had the most beautiful weather. It didn’t pass 73F and I think the Air Conditioner (AC) should NOT be used, but guess what? It WAS! The rooms where very uncomfortable and cold. I asked two awesome volunteers to change the level of air or if they could turn it off, as I said, the weather was super nice and we could have save some energy, too. However, I felt that my voice wasn’t heard, so I am making public my observation and I hope that spaces like this huge facilities can be adjusted easier. In other words, I think that the sessions are always good for everyone. We all come from different levels of expertise and Word Press has to offer a lot. I hope to see you next year and if you have some other experience to share, please let me know.
